This full day safari is really three locations. The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, the Backbay at Newport Beach, and the San Joaquin Wildlife Refuge in Irvine. Bob Sutton, a good friend from Apple Valley, has been down shooting Bolsa Chica a few times in the past month and has sent me a list of spot locations for the osprey, cooper’s hawk, etc that frequent the area. Bolsa Chica is a great location for all types of birding images. Some of my best duck images come from Backbay, while San Joaquin has been a great spot for wintering shorebirds. This is a full day shoot with a little bit of driving, not too much though. I will report on the shoot on Monday.
Over the years I have shot Bolsa Chica many times, with some amazing bird images. Diving Brown Pelicans, preening Great Egrets, hunting American Bitterns, fishing Osprey, wintering Long-billed Dowitchers, and so many others. I’ve shot Coyotes their, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Great Blue Herons, and just missed a Mohave Rattlesnake.
